Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about how the Morning Pages app works.
What is Morning Pages?
Morning Pages is a technique that allows you to capture what’s running through your mind. Writing your ramblings down can help you build deeper self-awareness and clear your mind. It can act as a substitute for meditation, a creativity recovery tool, or even therapy.
Does it cost any money to use Morning Pages?
Basic app usage is and will always be free. With the free version, you can write your pages, view simple statistics, export pages, and set up reminders. On the web app you can also sync your pages across browsers once you sign in — that’s free too.
Pro features become available once you subscribe. These features include:
Text insights
AI text analysis that shows the moods, emotions and topics contained in your writing. This data is grouped by day, week and month so you can see how it changes over time.
Morning Cloud
Sync pages between your devices and your web browser and write your pages anywhere. (my.morningpages.app)
Writing styles
Choose a style from a range of preset fonts and background colors. (this feature is for the iOS and Desktop app only.)
The Morning Pro subscription has two options:
$5.99 monthly.
$34.99 annually.
Prices may vary based on your region due to local tax laws and conversion rates from U.S. dollars. Your subscription can be cancelled at any time.
How do I cancel my subscription?
To cancel iOS or MacOS subscriptions please follow Apple’s instructions: support.apple.com.
Web app subscription can be cancelled inside Profile’s Membership section.
How do I sync pages between my devices and browser?
Morning Cloud sync is available for subscribed writers and enabled once you have Signed Up / Signed In to your account. This gives you simultaneous access to your pages both on the morningpages.app website and all your iOS devices.
How does text insights work?
Text insights is a fun feature which was designed to help motivate you to write more. It is generated by a machine learning algorithm, not a real person. Unfortunately machines make mistakes, just like real people do, so your insights won’t always be 100% accurate. If you feel judged or it makes you feel uncomfortable in any way, you can always disable this feature (tap the Info icon on the top of the Insights screen or just cancel your subscription).
There are three types of insights: emotions, topics, and mood. After you’ve written a piece of text, you can go to the Insights tab and check out what emotions, moods and topics are contained within your writing. Emotions (joy, fear, anger, disgust, and sadness) are displayed in colored circles, while topics are shown in white circles. Topics are themes and subjects that are featured within your text. Both emotions and topics are tappable. Tapping on the topic circle will take you to the piece of text containing that topic, and tapping on the emotion circle will give you an explanation of the meaning of that particular emotion.
Check how your text insights have changed by choosing how to group them: daily, weekly or monthly. Go back in time and see what you were thinking about a week or a month ago. Note that these statistics work best for pages that have 500 words or more.

How do you analyze my emotions?
Morning Pages uses OpenAI to read your writing and pick out the emotions inside it. If you write “I love apples,” the insights show “joy” as the prevailing emotion.
What kind of emotions do you display on the Insights page?
There are 10 emotions the app looks for: joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise, love, excitement, confusion, and shame. For more on what each one means, read Embrace Every Shade: The Rich Spectrum of Your Emotions.
How do you analyze my mood?
Morning Pages uses OpenAI to read the sentiment in your writing. The words in your pages can be positive, negative, or neutral. For example, “Have a nice day!” is positive. Positive sentiment means a good mood, negative means sad or angry, neutral means calm. The Mood Chart uses green for positive, red for negative, and grey for neutral.
How do you analyze topics in my writing?
Morning Pages uses OpenAI to identify high-level concepts in your writing — themes and subjects that show up across what you’ve written, even if you don’t name them directly.
How many words do I need to write to get the most out of my statistics?
Morning Pages can only show insights when a sufficient number of words has been provided. The advice is to write at least 500 words every day. If the app tells you that you don’t have enough words in a piece of text, you can always come back and write some more!
I wrote some text, why isn’t the app showing me any insights?
There can be a few reasons:
- You haven’t written a sufficient number of words.
- You don’t have an active Pro subscription.
Why is the app detecting my mood, emotions, or topics incorrectly?
Unfortunately, AI analysis is not yet perfect at detecting human language in all its variety and complexity. For some people it works fine, for others it doesn’t. It really depends on how you construct sentences and what words you use to express your inner state. Emotions and mood analysis is a touchy topic; if you find the text insights inappropriate or condemning, or you feel judged or frustrated, just disable this feature in the Insights screen info settings.
How does streak recovery work?
For every 5 consecutive days that you write in the app, you earn 1 repair day. These repair days are like bonuses that you can use to maintain your writing streak in case you miss a day. You can collect up to 14 repair days. If you happen to skip a day, the app will automatically use one of your accumulated repair days to keep your streak active.
Why are my pages not getting synced between the Website and iOS apps?
This may be because you have not subscribed to the Pro feature plan, or your subscription has expired. If neither of these is the case and you’re still experiencing a problem, please get in touch.
How can I make sure my writing stays private?
If you don’t want anybody to see what you have written, you can use the “Lock Screen” feature, located in Settings → Lock Screen. This lock requires that you either use Biometric ID or enter a password whenever you open the app.
What kind of data do you collect about my usage of the app?
Unless you register with Morning Pages, you won’t provide us with any personal information. If we ask for your personal information for another reason, such as for marketing purposes, we will ask you directly for your consent. When you browse the app, we automatically receive your phone’s ID in order to provide us with information that helps us learn about your browser and operating system.
When you create a Morning Cloud account, your pages are securely uploaded to the internet. In order to make this possible, we store your writing along with your personal data (such as your email and password) on our servers. We do not share any of your data with any third parties, and you can delete your account and pages in the settings section on mobile and on the web at any time.
When your pages are analyzed for insights, your text is sent to OpenAI for processing. OpenAI does not use your writing to train their models, and your data is not shared with anyone else.
